Inspired by the BBC’s Top Gear Vietnam Special, this action-packed ride takes the adventure much
further. We retrace some of the roads and locations made famous by the show, then add the incredible roads they missed—the roads we believe make Vietnam one of the greatest motorcycling destinations on earth.
From the spectacular coastline south of Nha Trang, we climb into the mighty Central Highlands before joining the legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail. Along the way, we ride twisting mountain passes, hidden back roads and sweeping stretches of almost-empty tarmac through jungle, coffee country and traditional villages rarely seen by the outside world.
This tour has the lot: unforgettable roads, remote landscapes, war history, waterfalls, beaches, welcoming locals and superb Vietnamese food. We cover big miles, but the pace still gives us time to stop, take in the views and experience the real Vietnam.

Day 1 — Nha Trang to Vinh Hy | 95 km
After our welcome dinner and a good night’s sleep, there is only one way to start the morning: Good morning, Vietnam!
With the luggage loaded into our support van, we head to Vietnam Motorbike Tours headquarters for a detailed rider briefing. Then it is time to meet the bikes, select your trusty steed and take a relaxed test ride along the quiet road near our base. It is an easy beginning, giving everyone time to settle in before the real adventure gets underway.
We leave Nha Trang and follow the coast south towards the small fishing village of Vinh Hy. The road delivers magnificent views across the tropical islands of the South China Sea before carrying us past Cam Ranh Bay and onto a wonderfully twisty seaside mountain section.
Rocky headlands, blue water and wide-open coastal views make this a brilliant first day in the saddle. The road is often almost empty—apart from the occasional herd of local goats—and gives us our first taste of just how good riding in Vietnam can be.
Day 2 — Vinh Hy to Da Lat | 165 km
Helmets on—we are heading directly up into the mountains.
Leaving Vinh Hy behind, the road climbs from the coast into the mighty Central Highlands. The air cools, the views grow bigger and the road begins to twist its way through dramatic mountain country.
Waterfalls sparkle beside the road, valleys open below us and every corner seems to reveal another reason to stop for a photograph.
Our destination is Da Lat, often called the “Swiss Alps of Vietnam.” Its cooler climate, pine-covered hills
and European-influenced architecture give it a character unlike anywhere else in the country.
During the war, Da Lat became a place of respite for commanders and correspondents fortunate enough
to escape the front lines. Although the city remained largely untouched by the fighting, it was home to
Vietnam’s National Military Academy and played its own part in the country’s history.
Today, Da Lat is known as the City of Love, famous for its flower farms, cool evenings and lively night
market—the perfect place to finish a superb day of mountain riding.
Day 3 — Da Lat to Lak Lake | 160 km
Back in the saddle, we leave Da Lat and point the bikes towards Lak Lake. This is another outstanding riding day, following winding back roads through coffee plantations, rural farmland and small villages tucked away in the highlands.
We make plenty of stops along the way. There will be a chance to sample locally grown Vietnamese coffee and visit an old silk-making factory, where the traditional production process is still carried out much as it has been for generations.
Out on the road, farmers tend their crops, livestock wander between villages and children wave as we ride past on their way to and from school. Our group attracts plenty of friendly attention in these remote areas, and the welcoming smiles are a big part of what makes the journey so memorable.
By now, you will be getting used to the relaxed road speeds of Vietnam. Slower riding gives us time to absorb the scenery—but do not mistake relaxed for boring. These super-twisty back roads are enormous fun.
Our overnight stop is on the shores of Lak Lake, surrounded by rice fields, traditional villages and distant mountain ranges. The beautiful wooden longhouses are always popular with our riders, and elephants can still occasionally be seen moving through the area. It is a great place to unwind with an ice-cold drink, enjoy some superb food and reflect on another brilliant day.
Day 4 — Lak Lake to Buon Ma Thuot | 125 km
We ease into the morning before saddling up and riding deeper into Vietnam’s coffee country. This region saw heavy conflict and bombing during the war, and our guides bring its history to life as we travel through landscapes that today are filled with farms, plantations and peaceful rural communities.
The roads wind through small villages and rolling countryside, offering both excellent riding and a
close-up look at everyday life in the Central Highlands.
One of today’s highlights is the impressive Dray Sap Waterfall, where we stop for lunch and, when conditions allow, cool off with a swim while the food is being prepared.
From there, it is back on the bikes for the final run into Buon Ma Thuot. We arrive with time to relax by the pool or head out to explore the local markets before settling in for the evening.
Day 5 — Buon Ma Thuot to Kon Tum | 230 km
Today we enter the mighty Ho Chi Minh Trail—and from here, the riding somehow gets even better.
Do not underestimate the distance. Road speeds are relaxed, the route is wonderfully twisty and the changing elevation keeps us working through every bend. Each day has been carefully planned to deliver plenty of saddle time without rushing the experience. It is like watching a treasure map unfold, one corner at a time.
This is often where riders begin telling us, “That is the best road I have ever ridden.” Then, around the next mountain, Vietnam delivers another one.
The legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail once carried troops and supplies from north to south through some of the country’s most remote mountain jungle. Today, its sweeping bends, altitude changes, lush vegetation and minority villages make it a joy to ride.
We are now deep in a Vietnam rarely seen by the outside world. This is true motorcycle adventure, and after a day like this, that first cold beer in Kon Tum tastes particularly good.
Day 6 — Kon Tum to Kham Duc | 180 km
Saddle up for another day of riding bliss on the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
The road twists and undulates through jungle-covered mountain passes, crossing wild rivers and climbing into breathtaking country. Steeped in history and once crucial to the war effort, the trail feels alive beneath the wheels as we negotiate one bend after another.
Much of the memorable riding footage from the Top Gear Vietnam Special was filmed through this region. It is easy to understand why. The scenery is immense, the roads are sensational and the feeling of riding through such an isolated landscape is difficult to put into words—you simply have to experience it for yourself.
We finish the day in Kham Duc, where our comfortable hotel has an in-house kitchen serving up excellent meals and, importantly after another big day, plenty of cold drinks.
Day 7 — Kham Duc to Khe Sanh | 300 km
This is a big day—and one of the true highlights of the tour.
Whenever I ride this road, I cannot help hearing Cold Chisel’s “Khe Sanh” playing in my head. The twisting route follows the Da Krong River through outstanding scenery, with handmade village homes lining the roadside and local families going about their daily lives along the riverbanks.
There are moments out here when I feel completely alive—at one with the bike, the road and the adventure. Vietnam has a way of getting under your skin. It is rich in history, deep in culture and full of landscapes that stop you in your tracks.
Sharing this isolated stretch of road with the Vietnam Motorbike Tours crew and a group of like-minded riders creates the sort of memories that stay with you long after the engine has gone quiet. Running close to the Laos border, this rarely travelled route takes us through some of the most majestic country of the entire journey.
On arrival in Khe Sanh, we visit the former American combat base and museum, where wartime relics and old aircraft remain as reminders of the fierce battles once fought across this region.
Day 8 — Khe Sanh to Hue | 160 km
Leaving Khe Sanh, we wind down through the mountains towards Hue, Vietnam’s former imperial capital.
Sitting close to the centre of the country, Hue has long represented a meeting point between north and south. Located on the banks of the Perfume River, it served as the national capital until 1945 and remains one of Vietnam’s most historically important cities.
The magnificent Imperial Citadel and surrounding monuments have earned Hue UNESCO World Heritage
status. Beyond the grand history, its laneways and side streets are filled with art galleries, gift shops,cafes, bars and excellent restaurants.
After days in the remote mountains, riding into this graceful old city provides a fascinating change of
pace—and another side of the real Vietnam.
Day 9 — Hue to Hoi An | 160 km
After breakfast in historic Hue, we ride through the city and begin our journey towards the colourful coastal town of Hoi An.
Hue is a city held close to the hearts of poets, musicians and romantics, where the traditions of the old imperial capital remain visible against the backdrop of modern Vietnam. From there, the road leads us back towards the coast and one of the most famous riding sections in the country.
It is time to open the throttle across the incredible Hai Van Pass. With the mountains rising on one side and sweeping views of the sea on the other, this road was Jeremy Clarkson’s favourite stretch in the Top Gear Vietnam Special—and it remains a favourite with our riders too.
We finish the day in Hoi An, a beautiful heritage town shaped by centuries of international trade. Its lantern-lit riverside, historic buildings, tailor shops, restaurants and lively bars make for a brilliant evening off the bikes.
Day 10 — Hoi An to Da Nang | 80 km
Our final riding day begins at a relaxed pace, giving us time to enjoy Hoi An before following the coast towards the seaside city of Da Nang.
It may be a shorter day, but there is still plenty to see. We stop at local highlights including Marble Mountains and the famous China Beach, with time to enjoy the coastal views and soak up the final kilometres of what has been an extraordinary journey.
The ride finishes in Da Nang, a vibrant city known for its surf beaches, modern riverfront and beachside bars. Our post-tour overnight stay gives everyone time to relax, share a few stories and celebrate more than 1,600 kilometres of incredible riding.
By now, the group that met as strangers has become a group of riding mates. We exchange contacts, raise a glass to the adventure and begin talking about where we might ride together next. This may be the finish line for Top Gear Moto 1—but the memories, friendships and stories will travel home with you.
