Welcome to the ANZAC Sea 2 Sky Tour
Good morning Vietnam! This nine-day journey begins with time to understand the history that connects so many of us to this country. We explore Ho Chi Minh City, visit Vung Tau and pay our respects at Long Tan and Nui Dat before flying north to Nha Trang to meet our bikes.
Then the riding begins. We follow the ocean road to Vinh Hy, continue down the coast to Mui Ne, climb into the cooler mountains of Da Lat and ride through coffee country to Lak Lake. One more sweep across the highlands takes us to Tuy Hoa before the final coastal ride back to Nha Trang. It is a tour of contrasts: history and hospitality, fishing villages and mountain communities, salt farms and jungle roads. Our VMT guides and support crew are with us throughout. The nine-day itinerary
Day 1 | Ho Chi Minh City - Cu Chi Tunnels and War Remnants Museum
Good morning Vietnam! Our adventure starts among the colour and energy of Ho Chi Minh City, still called Saigon by many locals. From the comfort of our air-conditioned minibus, we head out towards Cu Chi. Here, the tunnels show us how people lived and worked beneath the ground during the war. We watch a short introduction and have the opportunity to explore part of the complex ourselves.
In the afternoon we return to the city and visit the War Remnants Museum. It can be confronting, but it gives us important context for the places we will see over the coming days. Tonight we stay in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, close to Ben Thanh Market and a great choice of places for dinner. It is a chance to meet our fellow travellers before the journey south.
Day 2 | Ho Chi Minh City to Vung Tau - by boat
After breakfast we check out and head to the docks. All aboard for the boat journey to Vung Tau! The
busy waterways soon give way to a very different pace along the coast.
Vung Tau was a rest and recreation destination for Australian, New Zealand and other allied personnel
during the war. After checking in and enjoying lunch, we visit places of interest including the Worldwide
Arms Museum, with its collection of uniforms and military memorabilia. The afternoon gives us time for
a little R&R of our own. Find a beachfront cafe, watch the light change over the water and enjoy a sunset drink before tomorrow's visit to Long Tan.
Day 3 | Vung Tau, Long Tan and Nui Dat to Nha Trang - coach and flight
Today is a quieter, more reflective part of our journey. A dawn service is no longer held at Long Tan, but we continue to make a low-key visit to the Long Tan Cross to pay our respects and lay a wreath. We then visit Nui Dat, the former Australian military base. We take our time at both sites and let their history speak for itself.
Our private coach returns us to Ho Chi Minh City airport for the domestic flight up the coast to Nha Trang. By late afternoon we are beside the sea again, with the riding days just around the corner. Tonight we get together for our welcome dinner, meet the guides and crew, and look ahead to the roads waiting for us.
Day 4 | Nha Trang to Vinh Hy - 110 km
Ride day! If you are up early, take a stroll or a dip at the beach before breakfast. Then it is riding gear on and over to VMT headquarters. We run through our rider briefing, choose our motorcycles and take a
spin on the quiet road outside to get comfortable with our steeds.
From Nha Trang we head south past Cam Ranh Bay and onto the spectacular Vinh Hy road. Cut into the oceanfront rock face, this twisting stretch serves up open views of the sea and a brilliant first day on two wheels. We arrive at our resort by Vinh Hy Bay with time for lunch, a swim and a wander through the fishing village. Later we take a boat past the floating fish farms and out into the bay, with a chance to swim or snorkel in the warm blue water.
Day 5 | Vinh Hy to Mui Ne - 165 km
Good morning Vietnam. Sunrise over Vinh Hy Bay is worth getting up for, and breakfast with that view is
not a bad start either. Wander the village lanes if you have time, then we saddle up and continue south
along the coast.
The road clings to rugged cliffs before the landscape opens into long stretches of sand dunes. Every bend gives us another glimpse of the sea, with plenty of reasons to pull over and take a photo. By mid-afternoon we reach Mui Ne and our bungalows near the beach. Boots off, a cold drink in hand and the sound of the water nearby - this is a good place to spend the night.
Day 6 | Mui Ne to Da Lat - 155 km
Helmets on. Today we leave the coast behind and point the bikes towards the Central Highlands. The road climbs through small villages, green hills and mountain bends, with a very different landscape unfolding as we gain height. This is the kind of ride that makes the Sea 2 Sky name feel just right.
Da Lat sits high on the Langbian Plateau, where the air is cooler and the surrounding hills are a world away from Mui Ne's sandy shores. The city is known for its flowers, food-growing country and French-influenced architecture. Once we reach our hotel there is time to freshen up before an evening wander around the night market. A good meal and that cooler mountain air round off another cracking day.
Day 7 | Da Lat to Lak Lake - 180 km
Onboard our trusty steeds, we ride deeper into the highlands. The road carries us through working farmland, coffee-growing areas and villages where everyday life unfolds right alongside us. We may share the road with farmers and livestock, so we take our time and enjoy what is around us. Along the way we call in at a working silk factory for a glimpse of another local craft.
By afternoon we ride through traditional villages and on to Lak Lake. Our overnight stay sits by the water, with rice fields nearby and plenty of room to slow down after the day's ride. Local food tastes all the better here, especially with a cold beverage in hand. The area is home to communities with
traditional wooden longhouses, and the evening brings a chance to enjoy local song and dance. This is the real Vietnam that stays with you.
Day 8 | Lak Lake to Tuy Hoa - 200 km
Saddle up for another full day. We cross the Dak Lak Plateau through farmland and rice fields, passing small rural villages before reaching the forests of the Ea So area. The scenery keeps changing: plantation country, lush green forest and stretches of road where we can simply settle into the ride.
As we make our way east, the highlands gradually give way to the sea. We roll into Tuy Hoa with its wide beaches and coastal air, ready to park the bikes and enjoy a comfortable night. There are local bars and restaurants close by, and plenty to talk about after a day that has carried us right across the country from lake to ocean.
Day 9 | Tuy Hoa to Nha Trang - 130 km
Good morning Vietnam! The last riding day deserves to be enjoyed all the way to the finish. We head south on back roads past salt farms, fishing villages and a long handmade wooden bridge. Every small stretch has its own character, and there is still plenty to see before we hand back the bikes.
Then the road opens towards Nha Trang, with sweeping bends and those big ocean views one more time. We stop for lunch near Dam Market before riding back to VMT headquarters. There is time to congratulate our fellow riders and thank the guides and crew. Our minivan takes us to our final hotel in
the centre of town, complete with a pool. Tonight is yours to enjoy Nha Trang's food, bars or a
