The Journey

From the backstreets of Hanoi to the thundering waters of Ban Gioc, North East Explorers is a genuine journey into one of Vietnam's most spectacular and least-visited regions.

We ride beyond the familiar tourist routes, following winding mountain roads through tea plantations, rice terraces, remote villages and dramatic limestone country. At times, it feels like stepping back into another world - a Vietnam that remains wonderfully untouched by modern tourism.

DAY 1

Hanoi City Tour

CITY EXPLORATION

Our adventure begins in the heart of Vietnam's capital.

Today we explore Hanoi's fascinating mix of history, culture and everyday street life. We visit several of the city's important historic landmarks before venturing into the narrow backstreets, old neighbourhoods and local areas that reveal the real character of Hanoi.

It is a relaxed but fascinating introduction to Vietnam - and a taste of the organised chaos, hidden history and infectious energy that make Hanoi such an unforgettable city.

DAY 2

Hanoi to Moc Chau

APPROXIMATELY 150 KM

Leaving the noise and traffic of Hanoi behind, we make our way towards the cool mountain country of Moc Chau.

The landscape gradually changes as the city gives way to open countryside, winding roads and forested hills. As we climb higher, we enter a region known for its tea plantations, fertile valleys and traditional minority villages.

It is a wonderful first day on the motorcycles, with increasingly beautiful scenery and a real sense that our northern adventure has begun.

DAY 3

Moc Chau to Yen Bai

APPROXIMATELY 200 KM

Today we ride deeper into Vietnam's northern highlands.

From Moc Chau, our route winds through mountain passes, remote farming communities and valleys surrounded by forested peaks. Small villages appear along the roadside, water buffalo work the fields and daily life continues much as it has for generations.

With around 200 kilometres to cover, this is a rewarding day of constantly changing scenery and excellent riding through a part of Vietnam rarely experienced by international visitors.

DAY 4

Yen Bai to Ba Be Lake

APPROXIMATELY 220 KM

One of the longer days of the tour takes us east towards the magnificent Ba Be Lake.

We travel through remote mountain country, following winding roads across high passes and through isolated villages. The landscape becomes increasingly dramatic as we approach Ba Be, with towering limestone formations, dense forests and deep green valleys surrounding the road.

Arriving at the lake brings a peaceful end to a big day's ride. Hidden within Ba Be National Park, this spectacular freshwater lake feels a world away from modern Vietnam.

DAY 5

Ba Be Lake to Bao Lac

APPROXIMATELY 150 KM

We leave the tranquillity of Ba Be and continue deeper into the remote northeast.

This is classic northern Vietnam riding - narrow mountain roads, limestone peaks, river valleys and small villages tucked into seemingly impossible locations. The region is home to several of Vietnam's ethnic minority communities, and the colourful clothing, traditional homes and agricultural landscapes give us a fascinating glimpse into local life.

Bao Lac remains well beyond Vietnam's mainstream tourist trail, making our arrival feel like a genuine journey into the unknown.

DAY 6

Bao Lac to Cao Bang

APPROXIMATELY 130 KM

Today's shorter distance allows us to enjoy the journey through some of the most impressive scenery in northern Vietnam.

The road twists between enormous limestone mountains, crosses rivers and passes through isolated valleys where small farms and traditional villages cling to the landscape. Around every corner is another remarkable view - and another reminder of just how remote this region remains.

By late afternoon, we arrive in Cao Bang, the provincial capital and our base for the journey towards Ban Gioc Waterfall.

DAY 7

Cao Bang to Ban Gioc Waterfall

APPROXIMATELY 100 KM

A shorter but unforgettable ride takes us through spectacular limestone country towards Ban Gioc Waterfall, close to Vietnam's border with China.

The road itself is a highlight, winding through green valleys, rice fields and villages surrounded by towering karst mountains. The scenery becomes more dramatic with every kilometre.

Our destination is one of Southeast Asia's most impressive natural wonders. Here, the Quay Son River tumbles over a series of wide cascades, creating a magnificent waterfall surrounded by mountains and lush countryside.

DAY 8

Ban Gioc Waterfall to Lang Son

APPROXIMATELY 190 KM

Leaving Ban Gioc behind, we begin our journey south through another spectacular section of Vietnam's northeast.

Today brings close to 190 kilometres of sweeping mountain roads, quiet valleys and remote rural landscapes. We pass through areas where international visitors remain a rare sight and where village life moves at its own unhurried pace.

The riding is varied and rewarding, eventually leading us into the border city of Lang Son for our overnight stay.

DAY 9

Lang Son to Thai Nguyen

APPROXIMATELY 150 KM

Our route continues south as the high mountains gradually give way to rolling hills, farmland and the famous tea-growing country surrounding Thai Nguyen.

Although we are moving closer to Hanoi, the day still offers plenty of enjoyable riding along quieter regional roads and through small rural communities. Tea plantations spread across the hillsides, adding another distinctive landscape to an already remarkably varied journey.

Tonight, we enjoy our final evening on the road and reflect on the incredible country we have travelled through.

DAY 10

Thai Nguyen to Hanoi

APPROXIMATELY 80 KM

Our final ride is a relatively short journey back into Hanoi.

We travel through the countryside surrounding Thai Nguyen before gradually re-entering the energy and excitement of Vietnam's capital. The quiet mountain roads and remote villages of the northeast slowly give way to busier streets, crowded neighbourhoods and the unmistakable rhythm of Hanoi.

Arriving back in the city completes an extraordinary 10-day journey through one of Vietnam's most beautiful and culturally fascinating regions.
